About Me
Mission Statement: It is my goal to foster an intrinsic, lifelong passion for learning and reading in students by helping increase multiple literacies and critical thinking skills in English and all other aspects of life. I also want to encourage students to work hard, laugh, and have a little fun!
This is my 6th year teaching English at Fergus High School. My husband and I enjoy exploring the mountains and fishing holes of Central Montana, while still being close to my family in South Central Montana. I enjoy chasing our son, Emmitt around, snuggling our new baby girl, Hadley, and spending time with my family camping, fishing, antiquing, and working on our house. I, of course, also enjoy reading and laughing, and I love learning about new things.
When I was in high school if someone would have told me I would be teaching English someday, I probably would have laughed. While I always enjoyed school and knew I wanted to work with teenagers possibly as a teacher, I did not develop a passion for literature and language until late in college. I originally graduated from MSU with a B. S. in Health and Human Development thinking I was headed for a Master's in social work or counseling; however, having finally found a subject area I was drawn to, I instead decided to go back to school to chase my early dreams of teaching. I completed my English teaching certification at MSUB, and later completed my Master of Education in Interdisciplinary Studies.
I enjoy literature because it teaches us so much about ourselves as human beings. Different kinds of literature speaks to different people. We respond to stories and identify with different aspects based on the various walks of life we come from. Language also allows us to tell our own story, and who doesn't like a good story? Communication and literacy skills are crucial in today's world, and while these skills don't always come easy, they can be learned and improved with practice. Lastly, part of my draw to English was the challenge. Abstract concepts and figurative meaning frustrated my type-A brain for many years, but I kept after it. I mean, why not just say what you mean instead of making the reader infer everything, right? However, the more I read, practiced, and learned the more I felt that I had unlocked the secrets of so many words, worlds, and authors. I hope that students get to enjoy this feeling as they learn and break through barriers they never thought possible. I love having a career that challenges me on so many levels. High school can be one of the toughest and most exciting stretches of learning and growing up; there is never a dull moment! I am excited for another great year!
